About the organization
Orca Network exists to raise awareness about wild and captive orcas. The 501c3 group publicizes salient issues like dangers to the orcas' food supply. They use simple language, so you don't have to be a biologist to follow along. I've learned so much just by following them on Facebook! If you like whales, watched Blackfish, or are interested in the health of the oceans and the Puget Sound, this is a great organization to follow.
Why does it appeal to me?
I'm especially fond of Orca Network's Facebook posts, which often have user-submitted photos of recent Orca sightings. They also also posts events around the country to raise awareness and funds of Orca issues. They even have a store if you're looking for a present for a whale-loving friend or family member. I have to admit, since we moved to Washington, I've been a little obsessed with trying to see orcas, but I kind of refuse to do a whale watch since I get super ill on boats. I'm hoping that I just get super lucky on my infrequent binocular-toting visits to the beach. (I usually see seals and sometimes bald eagles on these jaunts so they're pretty cool either way!)

Day 1 of Thirty Dollars in Thirty Days Challenge: Architecture for Humanity
UPDATE #1: I just received a subscriber email that Architecture for Humanity is closing its doors (although it website says nothing about this, so I'm not sure what's going on.) If you are interested in making a donation to an urban design organization, I suggest Project for Public Spaces. I have yet to find another disaster relief organization that accepts microdonations.
UPDATE #2: Many (or possibly all) of the local AfH chapters around the world are continuing on, if you'd like to find your local chapter, try this link http://chapters.architectureforhumanity.org/chapters. If it doesn't work, you can always Google Architecture for Humanity + (location). Thanks for reading!
About the organization
Architecture for Humanity is a great organization that designs and builds high-quality shelter in disaster areas, war zones and other tough environments. Their philosophy is that shelter in these situations doesn't have to be dire, that it can be beautiful as well as functional and quick to build.
Why does it appeal to me?
I love that Architecture for Humanity provides high quality design in some of the most depressing environments, like refugee camps or temporary shelters after an earthquake. Providing something basic and necessary in a thoughtful way is such a great goal. They "believe everyone deserves access to the benefits of good design." I've been following their work for a few years and they do great work. Check out the model homes they built in Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina or their work in Haiti.

Introduction to Thirty Dollars in Thirty Days Charity Challenge
I have a lot of friends on social media who participate in challenges like "30 days of thankfulness", where every day they post one, or three, things they are thankful for. I think that's really cool, a nice way to bring mindfulness to one's life. But one day after seeing my Facebook feed fill up with these kinds of posts, I thought, what if, instead of focusing on their own lives, my friends were taking a few minutes a day to publicly do something for someone else? Well, I thought, if I wanted someone else to do it, I certainly should try it! Which is when I decided that for the month of January, I'm going to make a donation to a different non-profit every day. Before you're like, "WHOA, expensive! Unreplicable!" I decided to donate $1 each day. Here are the main reasons why:
1. Many charities will not accept online donations of less than $10. While I understand why they might do this, I wanted to highlight organizations that will take any amount of money submitted online, so that someone who has $1 or $5 can do some good without having to search around.
2. Many non-profits get very few donations in January as people have 'charity fatigue' from the holidays. I thought it would be nice to shine a little light on some great organizations in a slow month, and possibly inspire some donations.
It will be interesting to see if I can find 30 charities that both allow mini donations and I also philsophically support. At the end of 30 days, I plan to make a one-time $30 donation to my favorite charity that I've found.
My sister Emily is going to join me in this challenge. I plan to post my daily donations here and on social media, and use the hashtag #30daysofcharity. I hope that you'll follow along, and I hope to inspire a little giving in the new year (pun intended!). If you want to actively participate, even if it's just one day's worth of mini-donations, shoot me a message and I'll post your chosen charity here!
